I've been puzzling over the way that Hugh Howey uses the word "anymore" in his novel "Shift," Mignon Fogarty (npub13tr…zjt2), and I'm wondering if you could share your views.
One example (there are several) is "Maybe it was just him anymore." This sounds totally wrong to me. I would say "Maybe it was just him now."
Puzzlingly, it would sound perfectly correct to me to say "Maybe it wasn't just him anymore."
I grew up speaking ENG-UK. Is this usage a rare US one, or perhaps a mistake?
