If it's coarse, than yes. There's only so much usual thin fabric can take. I once used coarse washing soda and could tell immediate on the jeans - those are NOT anymore what classic jeans should be. I mix grated soap with a bit of soda in a cup of hot water, that makes goo, that I use. Also there's better chance the washing machine will actually wash out properly, you know, that it'll dissolve.
