My takeaways about #TheForkiverse are, I think, a little more optimistic

They had a 10,000 user server and were paying $89/month. I think we can probably do better than that, but ideally we'd have better ways to fund communities (I dunno how, maybe if each user paid 10 cents a month for the privilege of forkiversing, that'd cover the bill with money to spare. So a patreon community might be well-suited for the fediverse). But one person spending $89/month isn't great.

I'm surprised moderation wasn't a worse problem than it ended up being. But being able to host a community of 10,000 users with less moderation than a discord server for a year is rather impressive. Though, the fediverse (and atproto(verse?)) are still lacking in community moderation tools

I think I've maintained as long as I've been here that algorithmic timelines aren't inherently bad and we still should push for pro-social algorithms or people are going to continue to bounce off of it.

The community-centered approach worked very well. This was a community of very pro-AI people joining a fediverse of people who are notably anti-AI. And people tended to just block the forkiverse if they didn't care for it as far as I could tell.

I think the "self-hosting" approach they took was probably wrong. If I were coming at this, I'd probably be seeking an entity that manages everything about the server, including moderation and the-like. And pay for that whole bundle of services.

I don't think any of the hosts really explored the wider fediverse, which is unfortunate
