Israel has held a tension between secular Zionism and religious Zionism that Ilan Pappé calls between "State of Israel" and "State of Judea".
While I'm not Israeli, this is seen in many aspects of Israeli life, from laws on marriage, laws on requirements for restaurants to keep kosher, military exceptions, to issues of territorial expansion and war.
This and the split by the left has allowed minority and fringe political parties to take over and attempt (partially successfully) to re-shape Israel into their vision.
The one area of this clip where I disagree is where he talks about North African Jews, as this clip doesn't discuss the larger issue of how racism against them and their marginalization in society has played such a strange role, from ostracization to them being an important player in this movement.
I hope this provides some context for "Israel critics", as we see similar movements around the world.
