Perhaps I am a fluke - I've never read "Catcher in the Rye" (even though Salinger was my neighbor in New Hampshire.) But then again, I've never been inside a WalMart store, either.
I want to mention that there is a lot of really good non-English literature that most of us miss.
(I am planning a re-read of the longest - and perhaps the best - novel I've encountered: the Chinese work "Dream of the Red Mansions" - also known as "The Story of the Stone" or "Dream of the Red Chamber".)
