League 2 Fleetwood eliminates English Premier League champs #Arsenal in a penalty shootout in the #EFLCup today - Biggest upset of the year in English #Football and just another reason cup tournaments are so cool. The unexpected CAN and DID happen, much to the delight of Fleetwood’s home crowd. Cross-league tournaments like this one, plus the promotion-relegation model employed by the #EFL make #Sport much more competitive and enjoyable. Unlike the American model where billionaires and wealthy syndicates own sporting ‘franchises’ that are untethered to cities and/or fans - and in fact can be moved at the owner’s whim. There is no ‘promotion’ in American sport for worthy and accomplished lower league teams, where lower leagues do exist. Teams in England often go back to the late 1800’s, always tied to a specific city, never moving. Their fan-bases are often generational & fans play an outsized role in club governance when compared to US teams. Imma US fan of the #EPL & European #Soccer #futbol
