-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-
A headdress decorated with macaw feathers adorns this 600-year-old skull of a sacrificed child exhumed at the Peruvian archaeological site of Pampa la Cruz, Huanchaco, Peru.
The sacrificed victim belonged to the Chimú culture (900–1470 CE). The skeletal remains of an infant feature shoulder-length hair and a striking headdress made of macaw feathers from the Amazon rainforest, secured at the front with cotton textile bands.
Specialists note that the use of such costly ornamental materials from distant regions confirms the child belonged to an elite noble lineage, while also demonstrating the trade dynamics of the Peruvian north coast.
The meticulous craftsmanship of the attire and the remarkable state of preservation of the ensemble illustrate the individual's importance in the consecration ceremonies and rituals of the Chimú state.
Thanks to proteomics, archaeologists have discovered that the main humans sacrificed by the Chimús, of which this individual is a part, were male children.
Radiocarbon analysis found that the 269 sacrificed children had met their deaths more than 500 years ago, when they had been killed in carefully orchestrated acts of ritual sacrifice.
The victims were buried alongside 466 baby llamas - animals which were considered extremely valuable as sources of food and transport, and further evidence of a mass sacrifice to the gods.
Many of the children and animals had visible cut marks across their sternum and ribs, while many of the children were daubed with a bright red pigment made from cinnabar.
