Alfur is tiny. He could fit in Hilda's pocket (and has). He's an elf, and his species of elf is invisible to humans unless they fill out paperwork that grants them the ability to see the elves. Hilda meets him by stepping on his (also invisible) house and crushing it. He goes on to be one of her main companions.
