yes, in fact it was the E-grave in Ludovic Courtès's name, he is mentioned in the comments. In Emacs the character appears to be atomic, but only because it automatically decodes the UTF-8 sequence. I'll have to re-check the file using `read-u8` instead of `read-char`.

But it was probably the mode line formatting, because like I said, deleting that comment still caused a crash. What I would really like is for the mode line to be ignored, but I don't know if there are any `load-options` to do that.
