It literally wasn't, though. Many of the pioneers of AI (Viktor Glushkov, John McCarthy, etc.) were communists, and at least in Glushkov’s case it was partly motivated by communism.
If you don't want to give your money to corporations the solution is simple: don't use "Open"AI or Anthropic models. Use open models.
