Few societies have been as under-researched as the Smurfs. For decades we have accepted the official narrative of a utopian mushroom village where everyone happily performs a single job, governed by a non-elected patriarch. Yet beneath this veneer lies a community grappling with issues long ignored by both authorities and policymakers.
In this study I confront two of those neglected crises: the rise of homelessness, and a rapid increase in the misuse of illegal substances.
