Not totally dissimilar (bcs 'everybody knows' you can't train a cat, and they're wrong!), but in the early 1980s, I was living in a shared house, and I got a kitten. Me & cat were living up the attic flat, so maybe three floors up. I'd take him down through my flatmate's place in the basement, so cat could get to the garden.
I had one 'whistle pattern' that I used whenever he was in the garden. But the thing is that really, within about two months, I could stand in the garden and whistle that pattern and the little bugger would come bouncing over the fences from kilometres away bcs 'that's where the nice food is!'
