🏆🥇It's a record! Antarctic sea ice extent is now the lowest for the date it has been since the satellite record started 47 years ago.
On October third the extent was 16.739 million km², dipping under the previous record of 16.848 million km² set on this date in 2023.
After reaching an annual minimum in February that was not as low as in the last few years the regrowth of sea ice through the winter was much slower than usual, and now we're heading into uncharted territory.
The data I'm quoting here are from the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre.

ALERT! Antarctic sea ice extent today tied with that in 2023 for the record low for the date, and on the present trajectory it is about to set new records.
