If you're trying to convince us that John is a worthy replacement for Hal, you have to give us more than just a powerful flashback episode about John's childhood. Adult John is a bland, uninteresting robot who doesn't exactly evince "heroic protector of earth".
His decision about the ring at the end of episode 5 showed a spark of hope, but man this guy is a snooze-fest with muscles.
