Learn: ASP.NET Core Identity
Identity is the built-in user system: accounts, passwords, roles, email confirmation, lockout after failed logins, and two-factor login. Users can also log in with an external provider.
It stores passwords as PBKDF2 hashes (salted and repeated many times), never as plain text. Data goes through a pluggable store, usually EF Core with SQL Server. Lockout only counts failed logins when you pass lockoutOnFailure: true.
Main classes: UserManager (create users, check passwords, roles) and SignInManager (log in and out).
