Imo in general they've failed by focusing so much on societal issues when the right wing is basically a professional when it comes to convincing poor people that "we're actually on your side" even though their actions are the total opposite. You have to make the idiots and uneducated feel like you're the "economic" option because people vote in self-interest whether you like it or not. The blue selling point is always "we're not racist, misogynist assholes" which is obviously great, but it turns out racist, misogynist assholes outnumber the rest.
