I can see why the judges might fall for it, since a hallmark of LitFic is the use of fresh metaphors.

But I think people have become used to going “ooh, pretty language” without actually thinking it through. Good human litfic writers make their metaphors both fresh AND meaningful — and use them like icing on the cake, not make the entire cake out of the icing!
