STILL RANTING!

Dysrespect
Until I was on Tumblr, I had never heard the words dyscalculia, dyspraxia, or dysgraphia, before. Since I learned them, I have rarely run into anyone else who has ever heard of them. This is maddening to me because:
I got a teaching degree at college. Secondary math. Someone, at SOME point, shoulda mentioned dyscalculia.
Both my kids have it. Which means I have had to discuss it with various teachers. They are all perplexed to realize that there is a math learning disability analogous to dyslexia.
EVERYBODY seems to know about dyslexia!
At any rate. If I hadn’t followed one Tumblr person who posted about dyscalculia with very clear descriptions of how it affects her, I would not have been able to figure out what was going on with my own kids. I would not have been able to educate other people about it. And I can’t freaking beLIEVE that my kids made it all the way through elementary school without anyone ever telling me, “Hey, Kiddo is a great student, but you should see your doctor to check on issues of dyslexia/dyscalculia/adhd/autism.”
Aside from that one rather nasty reading specialist who pulled me aside one day and told me that Son was a good kid, but “There’s something wrong with him, like, neurologically.”
That was TRUE, as it turned out! But she said it in such a SNIDE way, and without any details that would have pointed me in the right direction! She could have said “I’m seeing signs of X and Y, and I’d like you to follow up with his pediatrician for an evaluation for those things. Dr can send me a form to fill out my observations if she wants to.”
That would have actionable! “Something wrong with him” was NOT actionable! I’m ranting, and this all happened quite a few years ago. But, wow. Tumblr saved the day, I guess. Sorry to rant, but - for those who teach, and for those who have small children; please be aware of these things. If kids are struggling a whole lot and don’t seem to progress even though they’re clearly trying - they likely have a reason for it! CHECK DYS OUT!!
STILL RANTING!
Now I want to make big posters that say
“CHECK DYS OUT” in the biggest possible font, followed by a bulletpoint list of common signs of all these issues. Post it in hallways in every school! Send it to pediatricians’ offices! Post it at tutoring centers! people neeed to knoooooooooowwwwwww!!
