Rownt cocked his head to look at him. There was something in the vowels as William spoke that caught his ear.
“Are you French?” he asked. “I would have thought you English by your name, but your voice says otherwise.”
William reddened. “Nay, Master, I was born in Lincolnshire.”
“You do not have a Lincolnshire accent.”
“Nay, I suppose I do not any longer. I’ve lived in London and Westminster for a long time, but I’ve never been to France.”
He does not get away with it, although Rownt lets him think he has.
