Retirement doesn't work but it almost works.

Why?

Retirement in the US assumes that you do everything perfect and have no accidents before age 67.

To really allow retirees to get any of the money they've contributed back the system would need to allow folks to retire around 59, when cognition is still close to 100% and you haven't had any stumbles, mini-strokes or misc accidents yet.

I think if they backed the age requirements for retirement 10 years the program would actually be useful.

So why bother at all if the system doesn't work?
Well, it works for a few people. Just not anyone you know, probably.
