this is begging the question. Religion is not monolithic in form or content. It is a social force like any other, subject to critique and revision like any other. Your unspoken assumption, which is false, is that religion is dictated entirely by its reactionary and opportunist "authorities". This is patently ahistorical, since people have established spiritual traditions in places without any strict authority whatsoever, including the Anabaptists and Millenarians, just to name two major examples. To say nothing of the interpretive tradition of divine allegory.

By falling prey to this metaphysical trap, you are simply ignoring the many examples of revolutionary religious dynamism, of critique and iteration, of actually lived spiritual collectivity. It is as though you think that, say, liberation theology or Catholic social doctrine are just accidents and not deeply considered and historically forged iterations precisely on religion.

Which is *why* one can be as religious as one wants to be with no relevant issues in relation to dialectical and historical materialism. Religion ≠ metaphysics. If, as you say, it is an epistemology unto itself, then you are in no position to narrow it as you have to such a high degree. You must at least admit that you are talking about religion as per reactionary and ossified institutions' dicta rather than the real historical movement of religious peoples
