I’ve had a lot of similar thoughts. There’s often the implied desire to have the “fun” or excitement of the age of colonialism stories without the ethical costs that are inherently part of colonialism. Or it’s doing a John Smith and Pocahontas story, which was a lie hiding white supremacist violence and cruelty. We also see that constantly with robots/AI as being a form of sanitized slavery (and the implied fears of a slave rebellion against slave masters). It’s something I can’t really unsee anymore, and undermines a lot of sci-fi media.

As someone who really enjoyed strategy games, it’s an entire genre I struggle to reconcile or find a way to not just see it as colonialist fantasy. Even games that are ostensibly in a sci-fi setting end up often built on an imperialist or colonialist fantasy
