The biggest, if not only, reason for not thinking of using a funeral as bait is because I assumed that someone close enough to be invited to a family funeral could be asked about or reached by other means.
You do have a good point about the sister being specified. That might be present for shock value to throw you off, instead of saying her cousin or just "another family member". The intent might be to make you think "oh no, why her sister of all people?!"
