The difference was pointed out to me long ago by a geology professor at College of the Siskiyous (yes, I started college in a town called Weed). The day before a field trip around Mt Shasta, he showed us the seismograph on campus, and jumped up and down in front of it to show it had no effect on the sensor. The next day during the field trip we saw the site of the seismometer. When he jumped up and down, he said, "now it's showing up on the seismograph we saw yesterday at the campus."😀
