I was talking to someone today about technology and jobs, and it struck us that in the 1920s there must have been a lot of opportunities for musicians, since movies didn't have sound and every cinema needed a live orchestra or something like that. This is sadly not a subject I've heard about much. Then when the talkies came all these musicians lost their jobs? Or is it that they just moved on the playing at the jazz pub around the corner from the cinema? Or did move on to film soundtracks?
