Tl;Dr: if you suddenly lose hearing in one ear, go to a specialist *immediately.* It can be reversed if you go early enough.
I woke up two weeks ago and couldn't hear properly in my left ear. "Meh, earwax or a cold" I thought and ignored it. It didn't get better so we went to a nearby clinic the next weekend.
I'd lost ~30dB throughout all lower frequencies, speaking range included. "Idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss".
