One thing I find very frustrating about working in areas where I feel that prior researchers have kind of made a mess of things is — I constantly feel straitjacketed by the need to found what I am doing on the prior work, explain it in terms of the prior work, compare it to the prior work…

Of course, if the prior work got strong results, then I should see if my new methods can get comparable results. But sometimes you are in an area where people have just flailed in five different directions, and you are coming in with a unified point of view that is auto-justifying.
