to share: my childhood was with loving parents and stable friends, in a non-religious Quaker/Secular Humanist community, surrounded by a group of people that were overwhelmingly counter-culture, and I was given a dollhouse, dresses to play in, and wrote notes to the garden fairies. I wore skirts a few times in high school. I experimented with mascara and lipstick, and when my parents found out, they said “this is OK and normal and perfectly fine to do.”
And yet. Even with all that I still have childhood/adolescent trauma, because the larger world and society of the 80s, 90, and 2000s existed alongside all of that. Even in the best of circumstances, it was a terrible time to be queer.
Many many hugs to you.
