We chose to enforce the obligation of exercising your right to vote in a democracy, just like the ancient greeks did.
Even if you just show up, draw a dick and balls on the ballot, take your snag and rack off, you've done the minimum required.
Also it makes people aware of how the fuckwits get into office, as well as giving a good indication of where fucking stupid people live, so you can avoid living there.
I can't actually say there's a downside to mandatory voting, at least the way we've implemented it.
