Athanasius wrote the Life of St. Antony around 356; the section we read is Antony's own address to the monks, on daily discipline, what possessions are actually worth, and how the demons operate. Antony went into the desert and found the same enemies waiting — solitude doesn't remove the battlefield. And Athanasius's real counsel turns out not to be the desert at all, but the church.
