They're great wire cutters too, but I haven't used NoRmaL nail clippers for a decade. I cut my kids' nails with this all the time, and have never accidentally cut down far enough to expose or cut the hyponychium.
If you get this as a gift, it does require this explanation so that they don't think you're a total loon. They still might, actually, but if/when they try it, they'll never doubt you again.
