The Church resisted jews. Where it had secular power or influence over the ruler jews were confined to ghettos and forced to identify themselves as jews when out among the Christian population, protecting the people from their parasitic behavior. Protestants ended that, creating safe havens from which they could practice usury and other sins with no repercussion, and later the "enlightenment" finished the job by removing the distinction altogether.
