Kenya has signed a $160 million deal to protect 173,000 km² of wilderness, roughly the size of Uruguay. Donors, including heirs to the Walton and Cargill fortunes, put up about half; the government will match it over ten years, with payments tied to policy changes. The first focus is Tsavo, home to 40% of Kenya’s elephants and a fifth of its black rhinos, and the Maasai Mara corridor to the Serengeti.
