After a blustery storm stalled search operations for five days, rescuers recovered the body of a missing California hiker on the snow‑covered slopes of Mount Whitney on Sunday. The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Monday expressing sympathy for the hiker’s family and friends. The individual has not been publicly identified pending notification of next of kin.
The disappearance was reported on a Friday afternoon when the hiker failed to return to the trailhead. Initial efforts focused on a low‑altitude approach, but rapidly worsening weather forced teams to retreat. A high‑wind, low‑visibility storm set in on Saturday, covering the mountain in fresh snow and making aerial reconnaissance unsafe.
