Empathy for everyone is what got us into this mess in the first place.
We need to be able to judge who is worthy of our empathy and who is not. A teenager who was horn in a bad neighborhood is worthy of empathy. An religious fanatic is not.
Making it public that this murderer and people like him are not worthy of empathy, is a step in the right direction.
