My father was the son destined for the priesthood - he was named Francis Augustine - in a very devout Roman Catholic family.

In 1938 his first mistake was to get married.
In 1939 he was marched off to Burma to fight the Japanese.

When he got home in 1946 he found that while he was away his wife got bored... and you can guess the rest.

Soon after they divorced which was his second mistake (according to his family).

In 1954 he married my mother (maybe yet another error?) and I was born in 1955 - apparently I was an accident!

He worked in a brewery which was apparently frowned on as well!

I didn't know any of this until my mother dropped it like a bombshell into conversation when I was in my 40s.
It explained to me a lot of the wierdness of my childhood where half of the family (his side) barely tolerated us and I was always shipped off during holidays to my mother's family.

Christianity? Surely it is about loving your neighbour? Maybe for some.
