I don't think the Russians really want more land, but they do want NATO to stop lobbing missiles, drones and artillery into their cities. Kiev (with NATO support, money, training, etc.) was carrying out daily provocations for about ten years before the Russian "invasion".
The Russian government doesn't want to occupy, manage, and support most of Ukraine west of the Dnieper, let alone the rest of Europe. But they laid out requirements for Ukraine back before the SMO. They want to be rid of Nazis, and they want NATO out. It's pretty clear that Moscow can never be fully secure with NATO military bases poised to launch nukes on 5 minutes' notice.
