i used to think the "web" in "webassembly" is a misnomer but later i understood this to not be the case. the capability model of Wasm, the formal methods used to develop the spec, the single-pass compiler, the featureset and development process, are all deeply rooted in web technologies and their culture and something else would not be able to produce an artifact that is as useful as Wasm is
