There is enough commercial sale of internet traffic metadata that if they care to know they can. Especially with the data they're already gathering and most sites being hosted in countries that *don't* have meaningful legal protections.
VPNs are not anonymizing tools. They're censorship & privacy speed bumps.
It's possible the local feds don't care that much, but I wouldn't bet on it.
