Yes, the people most folks think of when they say “farmers” are more properly termed “farm workers.”

Also, even back in the “golden age of American independent farming” (between 1790 and 1860 or so) the veggies and crops were for their own families. They were making money off of their woodlots — which is to say they were extracting timber from stolen land.

Not very many people in this country have ever farmed and the number is lower now than it ever has been.
