I do wish the people who remember polio weren't dying of old age and had talked more about it. (I remember my own grandmother once telling me when I asked how terrified they were when someone in their own school caught it.)

It's not just those who die horrifically. It can do terrible things to even some of the survivors. Warped limbs, inability to walk or at least to run, and a number of other visible things used to be in people's vision where they could remember.
