I feel a blog post coming on. Maybe.
We had a directors meeting today. It was good. Work was done. Planning was planned. Afterwards the guys all went off to do stuff or some went home and the women stuck around a little longer* just to kind of... hang.
I talked plainly about my plans and my reasons for wanting to leave the country. It's both simple and complicated. We talked about 'is it just about being a queer person in America or is it deeper than that?' It's deeper. I said that I think the American Experiment relies on some tacit agreements that draw lines that everyone so far has agreed cannot be crossed... and now they have been crossed and re-crossed; there is no going back. You can't un-ring the bell.
Later, I was talking to my Insignificant Other** and re-capped my basic reasoning: "I do not expect it [the country] to 'go back to like it was' and I do not feel safe here, or even welcome. In my own country." This is where I am.
She had an addendum, b/c she's smart like that, yo, that, TBH, "like it was" wasn't ideal either.
-----------------------------
* - I'm proud how far we've come in this regard. When I started I was the first woman in the org proper in a technical or managerial role (we had two women administrative assistants at various points). After a re-org and a new director, I hired the 2nd. Now there are 7. Four of us 'above the fold' so to speak.
** - My joke name for one of my dearest, oldest friends. She's straight, I'm not, otherwise we might be a couple. So we are what we are.
