In the UK we had our own "Forester" in the form of John Franklin. He wrote a book called "Cyclecraft" which was used as a text book about how to cycle by the majority of cycling training organisations in the UK. Many campaigners also followed his writing as if were the word of God.
These two people made it incredibly difficult to campaign for anything approaching humane conditions on the UK's streets because "all" the English speaking "experts" were of one mind. We were getting nowhere at all because everything had to be filtered past people who thought that teaching vehicular cycling to children was actually the way forward.
That's pretty much why I made the decision 25 years ago that we had to emigrate to the Netherlands, and why my family has now lived here for nearly 20 years. I have no regrets. None at all.
Both of those guys are now dead, but the damage that they did has barely even started to be remedied.
