SWE's have long benefited from amazing advances in hardware - incompetence washed away by Moore's Law. I'll mention 80's-90s Cray SuperComputers & how a typical MacBook could run circles around them. Cray's calculating biggest prime, nuclear bomb yields, etc and yet we struggle with a website or CRUD app efficiency.
It's not the engineers though, constraint driven engineering still works the young'ins 100% can do it, it's the culture.
