i've thought about this a lot as a more specific theater of what is essentially a war our society continuously wages against humans being publicly vulnerable and open with their emotions. men are definitely punished in unique ways for it that are intended to bring them back into line with the status quo male behaviors, ie self-cauterization and violence and insensitivity and immobility. (women are of course punished for it in different ways.)
