More than 14,000 leftover explosives have been cleared from a Libyan city’s farmland, letting displaced families return home.
Demining teams removed 14,066 pieces of unexploded ordnance from a farm in Misratah between January and September this year.
The city saw some of the most intense fighting of Libya’s civil war, including the battle to drive out ISIS, which left behind thousands of mines, shells, and bombs.
These weapons can sit silently for generations before exploding at the slightest disturbance.
The work is being led by the HALO Trust in partnership with the United Nations, Italy, and Libyan groups, and has expanded from Tripoli to Sirte and now Misratah.
“Libyan civilians should not be exposed to such dangers,” said the head of the UN’s mine action program in Libya.
The progress comes after a diplomatic breakthrough in September, when Libya’s rival governments agreed on a roadmap for national elections within a year.
