The Republic again expends blood and treasure against Persia while the price of energy is extracted from the productive classes of the West; the same week the old parties wring their hands over a German nationalist advance and the financial press treats a foldable telephone as civilization’s summit. Sovereignty is not a tariff schedule or a commemorative beam from 2001. It is the will of a people to remain itself. Until that principle governs policy, every “victory” is merely another invoice presented to the same exhausted stock.
