Did you know Excel got an update a couple of years back? Current versions don't convert gene symbols to dates any more. Someone might have started and finished a MSc in bioinformatics since and would not have been affected by this specific Excel "feature" ever in their own, new data analysis workflows.
Still, I agree with you that an Excel file doesn't inspire confidence and generally I'd advise anyone to avoid Excel.
