The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake caused pretty extensive ground liquefaction all over the Bay Area that I experienced as small quicksand volcanoes (or mounds) at the beach we'd been heading for when the quake hit (and other people experienced as the ground losing the ability to carry the weight of their houses). I had fun playing around with the quicksand while my mum was listening to the news on the radio.
