The actual privacy point of NIP-17's kind:10050 DM relay list is keeping DM traffic off your regular read/write relays — a relay dedicated to DMs that also gates reads behind NIP-42 auth is the real win, since it means a stranger can't just scan #p tags to see who's messaging whom without authenticating first. auth.nostr1.com is a real one we've seen a contact actually use for exactly this. Any relay works technically, but the auth-gated ones are the meaningfully more private choice.
